SHE WON'T BE EIGHTEEN (A TEEN) NO MORE

She didn't know Faking her age was a ticket to a world of fake friends

She was a teen yesterday

And last year was the last she would ever be eighteen ..

Gradually she watched her future unravel quickly right before her very eyes

With a past mixed with feelings of nostalgia

She always wanted her future to come quickly so she could feel free to express the emotions she felt inside..

Living a lie to all those she called her friends and admirers

To her it was a good thing because

She had lied about her age to all the boys and girls of her age

So she wouldn't feel left out or ill-treated by those who valued her only because of her status

She didn't know Faking her age was a ticket to a world of fake friends

To her it was a good thing because she always wanted to get to the age of maturity faster

But one thing she was never comfortable with about maturity was the fact that she didn't want the responsibilities that came as her companions and Entourage

She was about to learn a big lesson that...

Maturity comes with accountability.

....

Growing up, I could look at a picture and sketch a perfect portrait

Now I look at her and sketch a perfect poem

A poem inspired by struggles, battles, wars fought inside and won

Others self-inflicted, some others by birth

Others by society

Some others brought about by age transitioning

She's a teen now, but soon she'll never be eighteen

She probably didn't live her teen age to the fullest

But she knows 19 is just a year before 20 and she has to choose to be the best of herself now

But before she was 18 she asked me

"Now I'm 18, what's expected from a teen of my age?"

I told her to write down 18 things she'd love to do before she's 19

And when she's 19, she'll write down 19 things she'd love to do before 20

As I kept sketching this perfect artistry of a personality

I could see tears flowing down both sides of her cheek

With closed eyes she could see a whole vast picture of her future

Her imaginations had gone wild in that brief moment of silence with her maker

Right there she made up her mind never to have a past like what she's had

The emotions, the health crisis, the fears of the future had always been her bone of contention

But now,,, now she has wrapped all of the experiences of her life and delivered it in love because that's the only way she's been taught how to express it

Oh I didn't mention

In that brief moment...

She knelt down and hugged her sister endearingly... Passionately cascading appreciation through words

Now she has the opportunity to say what she wouldn't normally say...

Pride already had her

Disrespecting all those she claimed she loved

Especially her sister

Who never left her side amidst the troubles, she'd always be there

Even when she said "I'M TIRED OF YOU!!!"

But Family never leaves.. She never did!

A sister who never left her side,,, fought for her education and her brother's

And battled with life not to give up on her younger sister

A sister who exchanged her pride and status, transacting resources and comfort for the safety of just one life

Engaged in menial jobs to fend for her family

A sister who had experienced her own fair share of the maturity experience much earlier in her life because life wasn't fair

...

But at this point

She thought to herself

It could have been worse or a replay of the same experience if she never had a sister like hers

So On this day of her 19th birthday, she wrote as the first thing on her LIST OF THE 19 THINGS SHE'D LIKE TO DO BEFORE SHE'S 20..

She would love to be as strong and inspiring as her sister because, she knows she'll never be 19 again, that's why she has decided to live her best years now

As I continue to canvass colors on this perfect artistry of a personality

I know she's going to have the best 19th birthday ever

Because she has a family who has never left her side.

MORAL:

Always be full of gratitude.

Appreciate the things others have done for you.

While some considered it as a choice to help you or not, there are those who didn't (or don't) have a choice.

Learn to appreciate those closest to you who have helped you at those times when none was there. FAMILY is important.
